The Story of Villa Ilios

Hospitality has always been part of Greek culture.

More than two thousand years ago, travellers crossed Greece to attend theatrical performances, religious festivals, athletic competitions, healing centres, and sacred sanctuaries.

For the ancient Greeks, welcoming a stranger was considered a sacred duty.

This tradition was inspired by Zeus Xenios, the protector of travellers and hospitality, who reminded people that every guest should be treated with kindness and respect, for any stranger could be a god in disguise.

True hospitality was never measured by luxury.

It was measured by generosity, friendship, protection, and the willingness to share one's home, traditions, and way of life.

These values have survived for centuries and continue to inspire the way many Greek families welcome their guests today.

A Dream Built on a Bicycle

Every family has a story.

Ours begins with a bicycle.

In the early 1960s, Fotis Amberiadis, the founder of Villa Ilios, cycled through the streets of Katerini every morning delivering fresh milk from house to house.

Day after day.

Year after year.

With patience, determination, and hard work, he saved enough money to purchase a small piece of land by the sea.

Many people saw only empty fields.

He saw the future.

Long before tourism transformed the region, Fotis believed that people from around the world would one day come to experience the beauty of the Olympus Riviera.

He decided to build a small family guesthouse.

Not simply as a business.

But as a home where visitors would always feel welcome.

Together with his wife, Despina, they welcomed their first guests with warmth, homemade food, local wine, and genuine smiles.

Language was rarely a barrier.

When words were missing, laughter, gestures, and kindness created friendships that lasted for years.

Their guests discovered much more than comfortable accommodation.

They experienced authentic Greek family life.

Fresh fish from the sea.

Fruit and vegetables from the fertile plains of Pieria.

Traditional homemade recipes.

Walks through forests filled with herbs and wildflowers.

Crystal-clear beaches.

Evenings shared around a table with stories, music, and conversation.

Meet the People Behind the Experiences

One of the things that makes Villa Ilios unique is the opportunity to meet two remarkable people whose lives have been dedicated to learning through experience.

Kostas Amberiadis, internationally respected for his work with horses, has spent decades studying the relationship between humans and animals. His calm approach, deep knowledge, and passion for teaching have inspired visitors of all ages to discover a new way of communicating with horses based on trust, patience, and mutual respect.

Alongside him is Grigoris Verroiotis, known internationally as The Cyclist of the World.

For more than fifteen years, Grigoris travelled across countries as an experiential journalist, carrying a portable radio studio on his bicycle while documenting cultures, traditions, and everyday life.

His bicycle became his transportation.

His cameras became his notebook.

His microphones captured voices from around the world.

And the road became his office.

Together, Kostas and Grigoris bring two extraordinary life journeys together, inviting visitors not only to see Greece—but to experience it through stories, conversation, cycling, horses, and nature.
